Examples of Racisms Role in Modern America
Racism’s roots in America have come from before the dependence of our nation. When we were a British colony, the British Empire influenced us to use non-Europeans as slaves. Eventually we made use of African Americans as slaves and after the abolishment of slavery; millions of African Americans had to face the humiliation of segregation. Especially when America opened its borders to the outside world after the Civil War. Multiculturalism in the US gave birth to racist groups like the KKK and Black Panthers who work to make America of one race. New forms of prejudice have come from horrific events from the outside world. And new groups of people were discriminated against to this day.
After the events of 9/11, American Muslims and Arabs were discriminated against by the general public and the media often distorted the image of these people. Not just muslims were targeted, but due to ignorance of the public, Sikh’s who wore turbans similar to those who resemble the headwear of Arabs and Persians, were seen as terrorist look likes. On 9/11 2007, a Sikh tourist in New York was beaten to death in an ally way of New York City.
It has not just been Muslims who have felt persecuted because of the actions of a small group who hijacked their religion, but an Occupy Wall street movement claimed that Jews owned the media and the economy and were the reason to blame for the coming downfall of the Economy. Although the Jews have been persecuted for centuries, they are often used as Wall Street protesters as scapegoats.
Mexican Americans often have the problem face the problem discrimination as American Police officers have been reported to have a large tendency to question Mexican Americans about their citizenship based on their looks. Some are then searched for drugs out of the stereotype that Mexicans are responsible for the drug trade in America. Mexicans however have become a large part of our society as even a former illegal immigrant (Judge Sota Mayor) made her way to the head of the Supreme court.
